The site of Marlborough Buildings formed part of The Commons and was originally called Milk Street. By 1790, it was renamed Marlborough Buildings: the name ‘Marlborough’ thought to be a contraction of ‘Muddle Brook’ (a stream coming down the hill from St Winifred’s Well, which ran just behind the gardens.
